André Onana made a Cameroon last line look like a midfielder Europe could write down for a high line.
He was 1.90 m, from Nkol Ngok, and he stood where Ajax, Inter, and Manchester United needed a passer in gloves: Amsterdam, Milan, Old Trafford. The public file through November 2025 is 53 Cameroon caps. Club football gave him the Samuel Eto'o Academy, Barcelona's youth ranks, 214 Ajax nights, one Inter season that reached a Champions League final, then 102 United appearances. The habit that stuck was not a pioneer punch. It was leaving the six-yard box on purpose — receive, look up, break the press, sweep the through ball the back four had already lost.

André Onana Onana was born on 2 April 1996. The Eto'o academy had him first. Barcelona took him at fourteen. Because he was under eighteen and not an EU citizen, Cornellà and Vista Alegre had the loan years. Ajax brought the transfer forward in January 2015. Jong Ajax first. Then the first-team shirt.
Two hundred and fourteen appearances. Three Eredivisie titles: 2018–19, 2020–21, 2021–22. Two KNVB Cups. The 2018–19 Champions League run to the semi-final is the public exam: a high Dutch line because the man behind it would sweep. Ten Hag asked for a footballer. Onana was one. UEFA later wrote him up, in the 2022–23 technical report, as looking like a holding midfielder at times. Steal that as the method. It is not a clip of a dive.
A twelve-month UEFA ban in 2021, after a positive test he said was his wife's medicine taken by mistake, was cut to nine months at CAS. He still left Ajax in 2022 when the contract ended.
