Sergio Rochet — Uruguay's 2022 Starter, and Muslera's 2026

What 2026 actually was

Sergio Rochet did not start Uruguay's 2026 World Cup. Fernando Muslera did. The 2022 starter spent this tournament on the bench until a mistake forced Marcelo Bielsa's hand.

The mistake came in Guadalajara on June 26. Spain, group finale, Uruguay already in trouble. Álex Baena shot. Muslera could only push the ball into his own net. At half-time Muslera asked to come off. Rochet played the second 45 of a 1–0 defeat. Uruguay finished third in Group H with two points. Cape Verde went through in second. Uruguay were the only CONMEBOL side that did not reach the round of 32, and the highest-ranked team eliminated at the group stage.

What keepers can take: a World Cup group does not wait for a legend to find his handling. The deputy still has to be ready at half-time.

Nueva Palmira to Internacional

Sergio Ramón Rochet Álvarez was born on March 23, 1993, in Nueva Palmira. Danubio produced him without playing him. AZ Alkmaar signed him in 2014 as backup and ended up needing him. Sivasspor was a dead end. Nacional, from 2019, was the making of him: league titles, the Uruguayan Primera team of the year three seasons running, a keeper who looked like a national No. 1 before he had the cap.

The cap came on January 27, 2022, a 1–0 win over Paraguay. Diego Alonso took him to Qatar. Rochet started all three games. Two clean sheets. A saved André Ayew penalty against Ghana. Uruguay still went out in the group on the fair-play tiebreaker. Positioning, few dramatics, a penalty save that did not become a personality — that was already the point.

Internacional paid Nacional $1.6 million for him in July 2023. He scored the winning penalty in a Libertadores shootout against River Plate. He helped with flood relief in Rio Grande do Sul in 2024 when the football stopped. He missed a dozen club matches for the 2024 Copa América, which Uruguay finished third. By 2026 he was Inter's starter and Uruguay's experienced option. Bielsa still started Muslera.

What 2026 asked

Muslera, 39, had been the 2010 World Cup keeper, the 2011 Copa winner, the man who dropped a ball against France in 2018 and never quite lived it down. Bringing him back for a fifth World Cup was a bet on the past. Saudi Arabia, 1–1 in Miami: Hassan Al-Tambakti's header, Muslera parried, Abdulelah Al-Amri scored the rebound, Maximiliano Araújo equalized. Cape Verde, 2–2. Then Spain. Then the substitution.

Rochet's 45 minutes did not concede. They also did not change the table. Two points, goal difference minus one, out. Agustín Canobbio was sent off in stoppage time. Federico Valverde had already been hooked. Bielsa said afterward that he had given Uruguayan football nothing. The goalkeeping part of that sentence is simple: the 2022 starter was available, the 2010 starter was preferred, and the error that ended the campaign was the veteran's.

Holding still depends on a palm that holds the ball. Dried, salty, or dirty foam turns a parry into a spill. If the latex is still there, wash, dry, and apply KEEPER BALM. Rochet's international ledger at the close of the tournament stood at 36 caps, two of them in 2026. One was a second-half appearance that could not change the group. He sat because he was not picked. He played 45 minutes because someone else had already given the game away.

What to take from it

Uruguay tried to go back to Muslera — to a version of the side that had once been enough — and found that a World Cup group no longer waits. Rochet had already shown, in Qatar, that the shirt could be held by a different kind of keeper. 2026 was the year they asked the old one to hold it anyway.

He will still be there when the next cycle starts. Muslera's international road is at its end, or ought to be. Rochet is 33, at Internacional, and has now been both the starter who went out in a group and the substitute who came on after the starter did. That is a strange résumé. That is what keepers can copy: stay ready on the bench, then hold the second half when the night turns.
