Briana Scurry — The Save That Won the 1999 World Cup

Briana Scurry made a Women's World Cup look like a living-room event with a last line attached.

Dayton, Amherst, then a shirt that arrived as work

Briana Collette Scurry was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on 7 September 1971 and grew up in Dayton, the youngest of nine. She was 1.75 m. University of Massachusetts Amherst from 1990 to 1993: 37 shutouts, a 48–13–4 record, a 0.56 goals-against average. All-America in 1993. Adidas Goalkeeper of the Year. Atlantic 10 Player of the Year. A Final Four. That is the American origin story without the speech: a Midwest kid, a university week, and a position the men's game in her country had already professionalised while the women's week was still college first.

The senior debut was 1994. Mary Harvey had the 1991 shirt. Scurry took the next one and did not treat it as a loan. Sweden 1995 was bronze. Atlanta 1996 was the first Olympic women's football tournament — every minute of five matches, three goals against, gold. That is not the change. It is the proof the set was already a job before the Rose Bowl made it a living-room picture.

The United States hosted the 1999 Women's World Cup. Scurry started it. The final was China, 0–0 after extra time, at the Rose Bowl — 90,185 in a horseshoe that had already held a men's World Cup final five years earlier. Meola's page is that 1994 face. Liu Ying walked third for China. Scurry had already tested the referee on an earlier kick — she said so afterwards, to the Los Angeles Times. She came forward before the strike. The law said stay on the line until the ball was kicked. Nicole Mouidi-Petignat did not call it back. Scurry dived to her left and tipped the ball wide. Brandi Chastain scored the fifth. 5–4. The photograph the country kept was a shirt over a head. The hold is why the photograph existed.

She did not hide the step. "Everybody does it," she told the paper. "It's only cheating if you get caught." FIFA's own people later treated it as gamesmanship a referee had the tools to punish and did not. Liu Ying later said the ball did not go where she wanted — that it went to Scurry. Both things can sit on the same page. The step narrowed the angle. The dive still had to be made. A last line who will take a yard the referee leaves her is not two people. It is one job done without apology, and it is also a fact you should not tidy away.

What keepers learned is smaller than the parade. Meola sold a host summer in the same stadium. Solo later made a Women's World Cup last line look like a star the tournament already needed. Naeher later made a United States last line look like a hold you could still ask for in the 83rd minute. Scurry made a Women's World Cup last line look like the reason a country had a party. That is not a quieter copy of 1994. It is not a preview of Solo's decade. It is a public standard: the women's last line could decide a World Cup on television, in a building that size, and the country would remember the keeper.

China had Gao Hong. The United States had a side the papers already knew how to name. The useful part for a keeper is not the outfield list. It is that a tournament can still be donated from twelve yards after two hours of nil-nil. She refused the donation.

The same set, later, without the living room

Sydney 2000 is the chapter people skip when they only want 1999. Siri Mullinix started. Scurry sat. Silver. A method does not become false because the next Olympic week split the gloves. Treat it as she treated the rest: a fact, then a next contact.

The club map is the rest of the woman, not a second argument. Atlanta Beat in the Women's United Soccer Association — a founding keeper in the first paid women's league the world could point at. Two championship games. Goalkeeper of the Year in 2003. Washington Freedom later, 2009 and 2010. None of that rewrites the change. The change is Pasadena. The rest is proof she was still a footballer when the cameras went home.

The 2003 World Cup was bronze. Athens 2004 was gold again — the same set on a different restart, a second Olympic title that does not need a speech. China 2007 is the public exam other pages on this site already own. Greg Ryan wrote Scurry down for the semi-final against Brazil. The United States lost 4–0. Solo said, in public, that it was the wrong decision. Solo's page is the decade after that row. This page will not steal it. What keepers learned here is narrower: a 1999 face can be asked to be 1999 again. The night will not cooperate just because the photograph still exists.

One hundred and seventy-three caps — 159 starts, 71 shutouts in the ledger U.S. Soccer still prints. National Soccer Hall of Fame in 2017. First female goalkeeper in that room. First Black woman. The 1999 jersey later sat in the Smithsonian. My Greatest Save, with Wayne Coffey, arrived in 2023. The career ended after a head injury in a 2010 match. She later spoke in public about what that cost. This page will not turn that into a clinic. It is a fact, then a next contact that never arrived in a USA shirt.

What keepers learned: the women's line before Solo needed someone who would hold a World Cup kick in a building that size and still look like the same Amherst Saturday. Scurry made both look like craft. Later names on this list — Solo, Angerer, Earps, Naeher — sit in a position she had already made expensive to ignore, not because she talked the loudest, and not because she wore a 1994 red host shirt.

What to take from it

Watch the pattern. Scurry changed how a women's keeper could sit on a world list — not a Solo WWC-dominance decade, not a Naeher late-kick authority, not a Meola 1994 wave, but a last line you wrote down because a host Women's World Cup needed a hold and she refused to donate it. She framed 1999 as craft you can see: a set she had already used in Atlanta, a step she admitted, a dive to her left, a trophy a country then treated as a living-room event. She made 173 caps look like the same Saturday until a women's last line had a public reputation the men's host summer had to share.
