Alisson Becker — Brazil's Keeper Through Another Round of 16 Exit

What happened

On July 5 at MetLife Stadium, Alisson Becker did the part of the job Brazil had hired him to do. He started. He played the full 90. He cut out a cross that would have given Erling Haaland a tap-in. He could not stop the header in the 79th minute, or the drive from outside the box in the 90th. Neymar converted a penalty in the tenth minute of added time. Norway won 2–1. Brazil were out in the round of 16 for the second World Cup in a row.

Carlo Ancelotti's first World Cup on the Brazil bench produced a group-stage first place and a 2–1 win over Japan, then the same knockout ceiling as 2022. Alisson was not the reason. He was the one piece that had not needed replacing.

What keepers can take: a world-class keeper can paper over a 1–1 opener and a nervous group. He cannot paper over a penalty missed at 0–0 and a centre-forward who scores twice in ten minutes.

Alisson Ramsés Becker was born on October 2, 1992, in Novo Hamburgo, Rio Grande do Sul. Internacional made him. Roma made him expensive. Club football kept handing him the nights international football withheld: the 2019 Champions League, a Premier League Golden Glove, the standard against which every modern sweeper-keeper is still measured. By 2026 he was 33, still Liverpool's No. 1, still Brazil's. Ederson and Weverton were in the squad. The shirt was not in dispute.

What Brazil asked him to do

The Seleção's problem coming into this tournament was not goalkeeping. It was a qualifying campaign that finished fifth in CONMEBOL, a first World Cup under a European club coach, and a generation that had not won the thing since 2002. Ancelotti's brief was to make Brazil look like a club side: control, rest defence, fewer nights that depend on individual magic. Alisson's brief did not change. Catch the ball. Start the next attack.
